TROCADERO

The stylish connotations of the name "Trocadero" derive from the Battle of Trocadero in southern Spain, a citadel held by liberal Spanish forces that was taken by the French troops sent by Charles X, in 1823.

The battle was commemorated in the Place du Trocadéro, Paris, and the monumental glamor of the Parisian site has given rise to a variety of locales bearing its name.

Located in Paris’ 16th arrondissement across the Eine from the Eiffel Tower, the place du Trocadero receives its name from the 1823 Battle of Trocadero, when French forces captured the Spanish fortified position on the Bay of Cadiz.
The battle resulted in the restoration of Ferdinand to the throne of Spain.
Prior to the battle, the area was known as the place du Roi de Rome.

The original Palais du Trocadero was constructed here for the 1878 World Fair, to provide a meeting place for international organizations.

Architect Gabriel Davioud constructed the building in the form of a large concert hall, with two wings and two towers.

That building was demolished for the Exposition Internationale of 1937, and replaced by the Palais de Chaillot, much of which was constructed on the foundation of the original building.

Today, the buildings house several museums, including the Musee National des Monuments Francais, the Musee national de la Marine, and the Musee National de l’Homme, as well as the Theatre National de Chaillot.

Tourists can choose to visit the adjacent aquarium, or to stroll the gardens designed by Jean-Charles Alpland, and located between the building and the Seine.
