Amelie Poulain

The 2001 film titled Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain (translation: The Fabulous Destiny of Amélie Poulain) won the award for best film at the European Film Awards and received nominations for five academy awards. The sweet and fanciful story of Amélie in Paris captured the hearts of moviegoers all over the world.

Amélie loses her mother at an early age and grows up under the influence of her antisocial father, who mistakenly believes that Amélie suffers from a heart condition and must be limited as to her activities. Because of this, Amélie develops a rich and eccentric imaginary life.

When she is a young woman of 23, Amélie finds a job as a waitress at The Two Windmills, a Montmartre café with a staff of unusual people, lead by a former circus performer. Amélie's life changes on the day that Princess Diana dies when she finds a lost treasure belonging to the former tenant of her apartment.

Deciding to find him and return the treasure, she is so impressed by his reaction that she decides to dedicate her life to helping people around her whenever she is able.

Her complex hidden schemes include assisting a blind man, helping her father to realize his dream of world travel, playing matchmaker, and consoling the lovelorn.

Eventually, Amélie comes to find love for herself.

The film's whimsical depictions of the sights of Montmartre charmed the audience and helped to increase enthusiasm for visiting the neighborhood, as well as for all of Paris.
